Charity Challenge - Inca Trail, Peru

My personal goal is that one day soon I will leave behind all home comforts and fly into Lima transferring to Cusco, the centre of the Inca world to walk the Inca Trail.

The Peruvian Inca Trail Challenge is a ten day expedition, an exceptional challenge trekking between 7 – 9 hours each day as the trail reaches an altitude of 13,800ft.

During the hike through sub-tropical vegetation, snow-capped peaks and high grasslands, dank cloud forests, challenging high passes and camping under starlit skies there will be spectacular ruins, before beginning a descent to the final destination, Machu Picchu – the lost city of the Incas.

Preparation

I am still under the care of Papworth Hospital and cannot organise my trip to Peru until I receive medical consent. I need to wait 6 months before it is likely that I will get approval to undertake this challenge.

One of the common problems walking the Inca Trail is altitude sickness with mild symptoms of fatigue, shortness of breath, slight nausea and headache. My symptoms have no place on this trek therefore I need to ensure I am at peak fitness and free of any possibility of requiring emergency treatment!

Once I get consent to undertake this physical challenge I will need to undertake a 3 month training programme for general fitness and stamina. Preparing for the acclimatisation I plan to climb Snowdon, a tiny hike in comparison but it will kill or cure me of this ridiculous challenge idea!
